    That night as I was dressing to go out to an early dinner, the porter came up to my room to say that I was wanted on the telephone, so naturally thinking it was only a local call, I walked calmly to the telephone in the passage in my dressing-gown, to be greeted with: ‘Your call to London is here. l had not expected the call for another six hours. It was wonderful to think that over 12,000 miles the connection should be perfect, and that there in Australia I could distinguish the voice of each member of my family that was speaking to me from London.
