Namapada Ha Ewaye Therum - නාම පද හා ඒවායේ තේරුම් - Nouns and Their Meanings.

සමහර අවස්ථාවන්හී දී, නාමපද කොටස් දෙකකට පමණක් බෙදා දක්වයි.

1. සංයුක්ත නාම. 2. වියුක්ත නාම (පද).

{Sometimes, we divide nouns into two classes only, as Concrete and Abstract.}

1. “සංයුක්ත නාම” යනු ස්ථානවල හෝ සතුන්ගේ, ධාතුවල, දේවල්වල නම් ය.

සංයුක්ත නාම පංචේන්ද්‍රියන්ට හා මනසට යන ෂඩේන්ද්‍රියන්ට ම ග්‍රහණය වේ.

උදාහරණ : ඇසින් දකින ඕනෑම දෙයක්/කෙනෙක්/සතෙක්/තැනක් ...

{Concrete nouns are the names of things, substances, beings or places.
Concrete nouns can be perceived by both senses and the mind.
E.g. whatever you see.}

2. “වියුක්ත නාම” යනු ස්ථාන වල හෝ සතුන්ගේ හෝ ධාතු වල, දේවල් වල සබඳතාවය, ගතිගුණ හෝ තත්ත්වය විඳහා දක්වන නාම පදයි.

“වියුක්ත නාම” පංචේන්ද්‍රියන්ට ග්‍රහණය නොවේ. මනසට පමණක් ම ග්‍රහණය වේ.

උදාහරණ : මනසින් හිතන දකින ඕනෑම (කාල්පනික) දෙයක්; සංකල්ප/හැඟීම්, තත්ත්ව ...

{Abstract nouns are the names of qualities or states or relations of things, substances, beings or places. Abstract nouns can ONLY be perceived by the mind.

E.g. whatever you think. Concepts/feelings ...}

අපි ලොකු ගලක් දැක්කොත්, අපි බොහෝවිට එකේ තදගතිය, බර ගැන හිතන්න ඉඩතියනවා; එළදෙනක් දැක්කොත් බොහෝවිට, උගෙන් ඇති වාසිය, ප්‍රයෝජනය හෝ උගේ හමේ ඇති මොලොක්ගතිය, අංවල ඇති තියුණුබව ගැන හිතන්න ඉඩතියනවා.

{If we see a big rock we may think of its hardness or its weight; if we see a cow, we may think of its advantage or its use; of the softness of its skin or the sharpness of its horns.}

එවැනි වියුක්ත නාම (වියුක්ත නාම පාට කොට ඇත), අනියත නිපාත සමඟ හෝ බහු වචනයෙන් යොදා ගන්නනේ කලාතුරකින් ය.

{Such Abstract Nouns are rarely used with Indefinite Articles or in the plural.}

සමහරවිට, අපි වියුක්ත හැඟීමෙන් ම සංයුක්ත දේවල් කෙරේ හැරී බැලුවොත්, සමහර වියුක්ත නාම, සංයුක්ත නාම ලෙස යෙදෙන බව පෙනේ. (එවිට ඒවා නියත නිපාත සමඟ හා බහුවචනයෙන් යොදා ගත හැක.)

{Sometimes we go back again from abstract notions to concrete things, that is, some abstract nouns are used as concrete nouns. (In this case they can be used with definite articles, and are used in the plural.)}

උදාහරණ : (දෙස හොඳින් බලා, මනස වෙහෙසා, තේරුම් ගන්න.)

Abstract - He was accused of offering a bribe to the ticket-collector.
Concrete - She laid her offering on the altar.

Abstract - Living is becoming dearer.
Concrete - He makes a good living out of photography.

Abstract. Her kindness has made her many friends.
Concrete. She did me many a kindness.

Abstract. We had no idea you were there.
Concrete. That’s a good idea.

තවත් වෙලාවක දී, නාම පද තවත් ආකාරයකින් කොටස් දෙකකට පමණක් පමණක් බෙදා දක්වයි.

{Another time, we divide nouns into another two different classes:}

1. ගණනය කළ හැකි නාමපද - Countable Nouns (Count Nouns).

2. ගණනය කළ නොහැකි නාමපද - Uncountable Nouns (Non-count Nouns / Uncount Nouns / Mass Nouns).

1. ගණනය කළ හැකි නාමපද - Countable Nouns (Count Nouns හෝ Mass Nouns).

මෙහිදී, නාම පදයේ ඒක වචන හා බහු වචන ස්වරූප දෙකම දක්නට ලැබේ.

{1. Here, we can see both the singular and the plural.}

උදාහරණ : Bat – bats; Ball – balls; Wicket – wickets …

2. ගණනය කළ නොහැකි - Uncountable Nouns (Non-count Nouns).

මෙහිදී, නාම පදයේ ඒක වචන හා බහු වචන ස්වරූප දෙකම වෙනුවට දක්නට ලැබෙන්න්නේ, එකම ඒක වචන ස්වරූපය ම පමණි; බහු වචන ස්වරූපයක් නොමැත.

{2. Here, we can see one form only, which stands for both the singular and the plural (NO plural form.)}

උදාහරණ : Food, water, information, ...

ඉහත නාමපදවල බහු වචන යෙදීමට අවශ්‍ය වූ විට, ප්‍රාමාණික පදයක් (a quantifier) යොදා ගැනේ.

උදාහරණ : Some food - ආහාර ටිකක්; A glass of water - වතුර වීදුරුවක්; Lots of information - තොරතුරු රාශියක් ...

{They can be used without a determiner (determiners = a, the, some, this, and each, ...). And also, if we want to go plural we add a quantifier (some quantifiers) such as: a lot of, lots of, a little, a piece of, a glass of, some, many, much, ...

E.g.: Some food, a glass of water, lots of information, ...}
