පහත පාඨ දෙස බලන්න.

{Look at the following passages.}

{A day or two ago a hawker from the north of Sri Lanka went to the door of a bungalow followed by an old coolie carrying a bundle on his head. The Sri Lankan bade the coolie put the bundle down on a flat stone beside the porch. He gave a knock at the door and called out in the strange Sri Lankan way, with a choking sound, but he had to wait a quarter of an hour before the door was opened and an ugly face peeped out and an angry voice utter the words: “I have a good mind to set the dog on you, if you don’t get a move on!” The Sri Lankan smiled a sunny smile and pointed to the bundle, with an appealing look. But the door was shut in his face with a bang. He waited a little but in the end the only thing he could do was to make the best of it and beat a retreat.}

මෙම කොටසෙහි නිපාත පද කළුකර ඇත. 'A', 'An' සහ 'The' යන මෙම පද 3ට නිපාත / අව්‍ය පද යැයි කියනු ලැබේ. [“නිපාත / අව්‍ය පද” යනුවෙන් හඳුන්වන තවත් පද කොටසක් වේ = Prepositions - පටලවාගන්න එපා.]

{In this piece articles are in bold. They are 'a', 'an', and 'the' — these three words are called Articles.}

[peep out = “සෙමින් හෝ අර්ධ වශයෙන් දෘෂ්ටිපථයට පැමිණෙනවා.”]
[peep out = “come slowly or partially into view.”]

[“ඔබ බොහෝ විට එය නොකරනු ඇති නමුත්, එය කිරීමට දැඩි ආශාවක් ඇති බවට තර්ජනය කිරීමට හෝ නිවේදනය කිරීමට have a good mind හෝ have half a mind යන කොටස යොදා ගැනේ.”]
[“If you say that you have a good mind to do something or have half a mind to do it, you are threatening or announcing that you have a strong desire to do it, although you probably will not do it.”]

[get a move on = යන්න; ඉක්මන් කරන්න; වේගයෙන් ගමන් කරන්න; ඉක්මන් වන්න; යනවා; ...]
[get a move on = go; hurry; move faster; be quicker; ...]

[appealing = “ආකර්ශනීය හෝ සිත්ගන්නා; මිනිස්සු ඔබ හට උදව් කිරීම හෝ ඔබට අනුකම්පාවක් හෝ සහකම්පාවක් දැක්වීම ඔබට අවශ්‍ය බව (ඔබ අපේක්ෂා කරන බව) පෙන්වයි”]

[make the best of = “derive what limited advantage one can from (something unsatisfactory); use (resources) as well as possible”]
[beat a retreat = “to leave in haste; depart hastily”]

'A' සැමවිට ම යෙදෙනුයේ ව්‍යංජනයක ශබ්දයෙන් පටන්ගන්නා වචනයකට, [නාම පදයකට (A child) / නාම විශේෂණයකට (A good child) (නාම විශේෂණය + නාම පදයකට)] පෙරටුවය. තව ද එමඟින් සිංහලයේ (තව එකකින් හෝ සමූහයකින් වෙන්කොට ගත්) “එකක්” (එක් කෙනෙක්, එක් දෙයක් හෝ එක් තැනක්, එක් තත්ත්වයක්, එක් අවස්ථාවක්) යන්න හැඟවීමට හල් / අල් 'ක' යන්නෙන් (='ක්') අවසන්වීම නොහොත් “අක්” (බැල්ලක්), “අක” (බැල්ලක), “අකු” (ළමයකු), “එක්” (ළමයෙක්), යන ප්‍රත්‍යයක් සමඟ ම යෙදේ.

*E.g. - උදා : Child = ළමයා; A child = ළමයෙක්, ළමයකු ...

Bitch = බැල්ල; A bitch = බැල්ලියක් / බැල්ලක / බැල්ලක් …

A good child – හොඳ ළමයෙක් ...

{'A' is always followed by a word [Noun or Adjective (+ Noun)] beginning with a sound of a consonant. E.g. Child - A child; A good child; ...}

'An' සැමවිට ම යෙදෙනුයේ ස්වරයක ශබ්දයෙන් පටන්ගන්නා වචනයකට, [නාම පදයකට / නාම විශේෂණ (+ නාම පදයකට)] පදයකට පෙරටුවය. එමඟින් ද සිංහලයේ “එකක්” (එක් කෙනෙක්, එක් දෙයක් හෝ එක් තැනක්, ...) යන්න හැඟවීමට “අක්” “අක” “අකු” “එක්” යන ප්‍රත්‍යයක් සමඟ ම යෙදේ.

E.g. - උදා : Ox = ගොනා — An ox = ගොනෙක්, ගොනක, ගොනෙකු; A idle child – An idle child - කම්මැලි ළමයෙක් ...

{'An' is always followed by a word [Noun or Adjective (+ Noun)] beginning with a vowel sound. E.g. Ox — An ox;  Child — An idle child; ...}

A’ සහ ‘An’ මෙම පද දෙකට “අනියත නිපාත පද” ('Indefinite Articles') යි කියනු ලැබේ. එයට හේතුව එමඟින් එක්තරා ඕනෑම එක් නිශ්චිත දෙයක්, කෙනෙක් හෝ තැනක් හඳුන්වන බැවිනි.

{These two words (‘a’ and ‘an’) are called ‘Indefinite Articles’, because they are used with meaning of a certain one or any.}

The’ යන මෙම පදයට “නියත නිපාත පදය” ('Definite Article') යි කියනු ලැබේ. එයට හේතුව එය යොදනුයේ “දැනටමත් දන්නා (දැනුමක් හෝ අදහසක් ඇති)” හෝ “දැනටමත් හෝ කලින් සඳහන් කරන ලද” පදයක් / පද ඉදිරියෙනි.

{‘The’ is called the ‘Definite Article’ because it is used with particular objects already mentioned or known.}

තවත් උදාහරණයක් ලෙස "To set the dog on" = “බල්ලා උසිගන්වලා අතාරින්ඩ” යන්නෙන් හැඟවෙන්නේ, එක බල්ලෙක් පමණක්ම ඇති බවත්; "to set a dog on" = “බල්ලෙක් උසිගන්වලා අතාරින්ඩ” (ලෙස වෙනස් කොට යෙදුවහොත්) යන්නෙන් හැඟවෙන්නේ, එක බල්ලෙක්ට වඩා තවත් බල්ලන් ඇති බවත්ය.

ඒ අනුව බලන කල, එක් එක් නිපාතයේ කාර්යය භාර්යය එකිනෙකට වෙනස් බව ඔබට මැනවින් පැහැදිළි වනු ඇත.

{Now, notice that if we change some of these articles from definite to indefinite, or from indefinite to definite, the meaning of the nouns becomes different in peculiar ways. Thus in the first line if we were to change “a hawker” to "the hawker" the word would imply that we already knew him or knew about him. "To set the dog on" implies that there is only one dog kept; "to set a dog on" would imply that there were more dogs than one kept.}

*“උදා - උදාහරණ / උදාහරණයක් ලෙස” යන්නට යොදන “E.g.” යන යෙදුම ලතින් (Exempli gratia) සම්භවය ඇති (තත්සම) යෙදුමකි.

{*E.g. = Exempli gratia (Latin) = For example)}
