If the verb in the Principal Clause is in the Past Tense, the verb in the Subordinate Clause should also be in the Past Tense.

A Past tense in the Principal Clause may be followed by a Present Tense in the Subordinate Clause when we wish to express something that generally happens or that is always true.
He told me that volcanoes shoot out steam and smoke to a great height.
Didn’t you know that Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan.
My mother bade me remember that all doors open to courtesy.
