Sitting comfortably with his back against the tree trunk was an old male langur with a black face and a grey beard. He seemed to be guarding his family while they ate their breakfast. Most of the time he kept up a regular chattering, like a magpie. I could see his mouth open and shut while he did so. Every now and again he would give forth a loud deep whoop, which was answered by another monkey somewhere far away in the deep ravine below. The sound was such as might be produced by blowing into a big shell, and the echo of it was tossed from one side of the ravine to the other.
