A splendid ceremony took place at Raigarh in 1674. The famous Maratha prince, Sivaji, having done great things in many wars, was crowned King. He sat in a balance against a heap of gold in the other scale, and then gave away the gold to his Brahmans. Lotus flowers made of gold and set with jewels were presented to many of the people. The throne on which Sivaji sat was adorned with eight pillars crusted with jewels. A parasol, fringed with pearls, was held over the King’s head. On each of the begging monks was bestowed a supply of food for four months.
