About ten o’clock in the morning a large stone struck Bayard and broke his spine. He grew pale and cried out: ‘Have pity on me, O God, according to thy great mercy,’ and nearly fell. His men wished him to withdraw from the fray, but he would not. ‘It is all over,’ he said to them: ‘I do not wish in my last moments to turn my back to the enemy for the first time in my life.’ They placed him at the foot of a tree, so that he might have his face towards the foe. His servants were weeping at his side. He begged them to go, lest they should be made prisoners, which would be another grief for him.
