“1. Used to show what is right, appropriate, etc., especially when criticizing somebody’s actions:
He should have been more careful.
2. Used to say that something that was expected has not happened:
The bus should have arrived ten minutes ago.
3. Used to tell somebodies that something would amuse or surprise or how funny, strange, beautiful etc., if they saw or heard or experienced it:
You should have seen her face when she found out!
4. Should have = Ought to have:
She should have asked for some help.
You ought to have been more careful.
5. If you say that something should have happened, you mean that it did not happen, but that you wish it had. If you say that something should not have happened, you mean that it did happen, but that you wish it had not.
I should have gone this morning but I was feeling a bit ill.
You should have written to the area manager again.
I shouldn't have said what I did.
# Used to say what would have been right or sensible, but was not done.
They should have called the police.
# used to say what was expected, but did not happen.
It was an easy test and he should have passed, but he didn't."
